This book analyzes the evolution of the idea of human rights, the "universalization" of human rights as reflected in the spread of "constitutionalism" to almost all states. It focuses on the conditions that must exist if the rights of men and women are to be more secure in the future.

Louis Henkin is Hamilton Fish Professor of International Law and Diplomacy, professor of constitutional law, and also a director of the Center for the Study of Human Rights at Columbia University. His extensive legal experience includes service at the U.N. and in the U.S. Department of State. Professor Henkin is currently president of the U.S. Institute of Human Rights and codirector of the Columbia Center for the Study of Human Rights.
