This book has been written for trainee teachers and newly qualified teachers teaching in Key Stages 1 and 2 who wish to develop their understanding and practice of assessment.
This book supports trainee and newly qualified teachers in developing their understanding of assessment – one of the most difficult fields of professional practice – and specialises in Key Stages 1 and 2. Practical tasks enable teachers to rehearse a range of valuable skills, while readers will also consider the role of self-assessment, both in the appraisal of children′s learning and in setting targets for future teaching and learning. In addition, the book suggests methods for evaluating the range and purpose of different forms of record keeping.

Angela Woodfield is now an independent educational consultant who has spent most of her professional life working in Coventry as a primary school teacher and headteacher. Mary Briggs is an Associate Professor at the Institute of Education, University of Warwick where she teaches across a range of the Institute′s undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Mary was an Early Years, primary and SEN teacher for many years, including deputy and headship before working as an academic in the University sector. Cynthia Martin recently retired from a teaching post at the University of Warwick. She was a Senior Teaching Fellow at the University and led a number of seminars and training sessions in school on how to make effective assessment of learning. Cynthia also has extensive practical experience in this area from her work in schools.
