WHAT IS A FOREST SCHOOL? We have to at least attempt to answer this question. We have enlisted the help of a few Forestry professors, botanists, arborists, and biologists to try and define the forest school. We also look at it from the point of view of a child, which is why we're here. When thinking back to childhood, what memories still linger? Are they memories of sitting in a classroom listening to that "e;Charlie Gretchen Ferguson teaches the voice sitting criss- cross applesauce (whatever that means)? Or are they more tactical, more joyful than all of that? Perhaps you recall the feeling of a stick as it drags across the dirt or the thrill of watching a fish leap out of a stream. Maybe it's the first time you fell and scraped your knee and the feeling of triumph when you got back up to join your friends on the playground. The developing human is more than a sponge picking up signals from the external world; the developing human is a small explorer waiting to understand who they are and how they fit into the great web of life. When the external environment is artificial, the little explorer makes sense of themselves in that world, a much more stifled world where development is concerned. EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT FOREST SCHOOLS However, when allowed to explore something infinitely complex, the inner world opens up in response.
