Famous for his so-called "gaffes", Prince Philip is a national treasure: a man whose immense contribution to Britain is not always fully appreciated. This work contains a comprehensive list of the iron Duke's notorious one-liners. It also shows that, behind the Duke's bluntness and banter, is a compassionate, deep-thinking man.
This work was published on the 85th birthday of HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. Famous for his so-called "gaffes", Prince Philip is, quite simply, a national treasure: a man whose immense contribution to Britain (and the world) is not always fully appreciated. For nearly 60 years he has been not only at the Queen's side, but often several paces behind her! This cannot have been easy for a tough, no-nonsense ex-naval officer who distinguished himself in World War II. However, armed with a down-to-earth view on life and a magnificent sense of humour, he has carved out a unique role as Royal Consort. For the first time, two veteran Fleet Street royal reporters have compiled a comprehensive list of the iron Duke's notorious one-liners. In researching the book, Phil Dampier and Ashley Walton came to realise that there is so much more to the Prince than simply his famously acerbic comments. This book is great fun but it also shows that, behind the Duke's bluntness and banter, is a compassionate, deep-thinking man.

Phil Dampier has been writing about the Royal Family for 20 years. Between 1986 and 1991, he covered the Royals for The Sun and broke many major news stories. Phil has travelled to more than 40 countries following members of the House of Windsor. His articles have been published worldwide. He is currently Royal Editor of New Idea - one of Australia's biggest selling magazines. Phil lives in Kent with his partner Ann. Ashley Walton was the Royal Correspondent for the Daily Express from 1979 to 1992. He travelled the globe covering Royal tours including The Queen and Prince Philip in India and Africa, and was in China during their 1986 visit when the Duke made his famous "slitty-eyes" remark. Ashley was one of the first reporters to identify a young Lady Diana Spencer as a future royal bride. Ashley lives in Herfordshire with his wife Joan. They have two sons.
