Ray Killen is the former chair of the Coastal Kayaking Committee of the American Canoe Association. He is an ACA-Certified Coastal Kayak Instructor/Trainer/Educator and has written the curricula for the ACA's Introduction to Traditional Kayak Skills and Instructor Endorsement courses. He holds a British Canoe Union 4-star rating, is a Certified Level 3 coach, and a recipient of the BCU's Canoe Safety Award. A sea kayaker since 1988, Ray has paddled the coasts of New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Delaware, Virginia, Lake Superior, and Florida, and the tidal races off Anglesey, Wales. He has been a volunteer instructor with New Jersey Ocean County Parks and Recreation and with the "Becoming an Outdoor Woman" program. Ray has had extensive training in moving water, rescue scenarios, towing methods, tidal races, and kayak surfing, and he is the owner and primary instructor of Katabasis LLC, offering instruction in a wide range of sea kayaking skills.
