Discovering the principles of Aikido, this title offers a complete course from beginner level to an advanced stage. It contains over 350 colour photographs that demonstrate every movement in simple-to-follow stages. Learn the way of spiritual harmony with powerful yet graceful exercises that develop strength, suppleness and stamina. This is a beautiful illustrated guide to the history, philosophy, practice and etiquette of this Japanese martial art, and the physical and spiritual benefits it can bring. The book begins by outlining the traditions, etiquette, principles and objectives of Aikido, then discusses how Aikido sharpens the mind and body, and explains the preparation, breathing techniques and warm-up exercises. The core of the book is a clearly photographed step-by-step guide to the basic postures, throws and movements, techniques and applications of Aikido, all demonstated by expert teachers. Advanced features include how to fall, throw, control and fend off opponents with weapons.
With advice on choosing a dojo (teaching school) and useful contacts, this book is the definitive manual to learning these powerful yet graceful exercises that develop strength, suppleness and stamina.
Peter Brady started practising Aikido in 1969. In 1970 he joined the Birmingham Athletic Institute and attained Shodan in 1973. He was made Shodan from Chiba Sensei in 1976, Nidan in 1978 and Sandan in 1984 with Shibata Sensei. In 1987 Peter saw promotion to Yondan again by Chiba Sensei. In 1996, Peter was promoted to the rank of Godan and then to Rokudan in 2003 and is currently a Shidoin (Hombu recognised Senior teacher) with the United Kingdom Aikikai. He also holds the position of Senior Coach and Children's Coach within the British Aikido Board. Peter is the chief instructor for five independently run clubs around the United Kingdom. As a result of Chiba Sensei's influence Peter has a strong interest in the weapon side of Aikido and also in the art of Sword drawing known as Iaido. He holds the rank of Sandan with the British Kendo Federation and regularly teaches the Art at his own club. In addition to weekly classes Peter teaches monthly seminars for his group of clubs. These are geared to include general courses, Instructors and Fukushidoin courses (Seniors only), and weapons. Peter's previously published work includes The Ultimate Book of Martial Arts.
