A beautifully illustrated collection of drawings, watercolours, etchings and sketchbook studies by international award-winning artist Dr Susan Poole VPSGFA UKCPS from her observations of a wide range of animals both wild and domestic. It reflects an artist's journey that has taken her across many continents to observe animals first-hand. Zoological parks and animal sanctuaries were also sometimes visited for closer encounters. In addition, drawings have been made of domestic and farm animals she came across. Over a 100 of her works are included, with more than 60 illustrations in colour, together with some fascinating facts about each animal and where it was sighted. It will be of interest to anyone who enjoys animals or art.
Animals are not easy subjects for an artist to draw because of their constant movement. Working sketchbook studies which led up to Susan's final drawings have often been included. And in some instances, her observations remain as solely sketches, for the moment.
Whilst not intended to provide comprehensive information about the animals illustrated, some fascinating facts about each one as well as how and where it was seen have been included. And a list of sources and further reading is shown at the back of the book for anyone interested in expanding their knowledge.
Susan Poole has an MA in Fine Art and a PhD in Art and Archaeology from University College London, with work published on art from the prehistoric Aegean. She has had her drawings, etchings and watercolours selected for many national and international exhibitions and shown in galleries including the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, the Mall Galleries, the Bankside Gallery, and the Westminster Gallery, and with animal specific societies such as the Society of Wildlife Artists and the Society of Equestrian Artists. She has won awards for her animal drawings and etchings, including from the Association of Animal Artists, the international Pencil Society, and the Society of Graphic Fine Art (Best in Show), of which she is now Vice President. Her work is held in collections both in Britain and abroad. Born in London Susan now lives and works in Devon.
