THE ART ENSEMBLE OF CHICAGO AND ASSOCIATED ENSEMBLES ist eine Edition in limitierter Auflage mit 21 CDs, die zur Feier des 50-jährigen Jubiläums dieser Bannerträger der Great Black Music herausgegeben wird. Sowohl das Art Ensemble of Chicago als auch ECM Records wurden 1969 gegründet, und es gab viele gemeinsame Erfahrungen. Art Ensemble-Mitgründer Roscoe Mitchell sagt: "Es war unglaublich, diese Reise zusammen unternommen zu haben."Neben den Alben des Art Ensembles umfasst die Zusammenstellung auch ECM-Aufnahmen von Wadada Leo Smith, Lester Bowie, Evan Parker, Jack DeJohnette und Roscoe Mitchell.

Die wunderschön gestaltete Box enthält ein 300-seitiges Buch, das alle originalen Albumcover, Linernotes und Poesie (von Joseph Jarman) enthält, sowie Zitate von Mitgliedern des Art Ensembles und der Presse, neue Texte von Craig Taborn, Vijay Iyer und George Lewis, ein Vorwort von Manfred Eicher und eine Einleitung von Steve Lake. Plus: viele Fotos (einige bisher unveröffentlicht), Archivdokumente und mehr.
