Based on the International Sport Coaching Framework (Version 1.2), the International Golf Coaching Framework combines the knowledge and skills developed by the PGAs and their members and the desire to share best practices and grow the game of golf across the world.
The International Golf Coaching Framework is intended to further develop the quality of coaching in the sport around the world. The Framework provides a common language and set of principles about coaching that span all borders. To that end, the Framework serves to establish a consensus on the

• primary functions of a coach;

• roles and responsibilities of a coach in athlete development;

• qualifications, knowledge and core competencies needed for coaching effectively; and

• methods by which coaches are educated, developed and certified.

This book is an adaptation of the International Sport Coaching Framework (Version 1.2) that was created by the International Council for Coaching Excellence, Association of Summer Olympic International Federations and Leeds Beckett University to provide international federations like IGF and sport organisations like PGAWA considerations for designing, benchmarking and refining their coach education and certification programmes. While it retains much of the underlying philosophy of the original coaching framework, the International Golf Coaching Framework has been adapted to provide the national federations, unions and PGAs with the detail required to build their own coaching systems. As a result, golf now has a universal platform from which to develop coaches and, ultimately, enrich the experience of the sport for all.

The International Sport Coaching Framework is a joint endeavor led by the International Council for Coaching Excellence (ICCE) and the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF), supported by Leeds Beckett University (LBU) through project administration, technical advice and research. Editors of the publication are Mark Harrington, development manager of the International Rugby Board and chair of the Development and Education Group of ASOIF; Sergio Lara-Bercial, senior research fellow at LBU and ICCE technical officer; and the late Patrick Duffy. The International Golf Federation (IGF) and PGA World Alliance (PGAWA) acknowledges the valued contribution of those who developed the International Sport Coaching Framework (Version 1.2), upon which this book is based. The International Council for Coaching Excellence, the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations and Leeds Beckett are to be commended for creating such a seminal work. With that document as a foundation, the IGF and PGAWA were able to develop an international coaching framework for golf that suits the specific needs of the sport. The IGF is recognized by the International Olympic Committee as the world governing body for golf. Its mission is to promote golf as an Olympic sport; encourage the international development of golf; administer golf as the recognized International Federation within the Olympic Movement; and organize the golf competitions at the Olympic Games, Youth Olympic Games and the World Amateur Team Championships. The PGAWA consists of the leading PGAs in the world: America, Australia, Canada, Germany, Great Britain and Ireland, Japan, New Zealand, South Africa, Sweden and the PGAs of Europe. The International Golf Coaching Framework combines the knowledge and skills developed by the PGAs and their members and the desire to share best practices and grow the game of golf across the world. Several individuals were indispensable in creating the IGCF: • Chair: Kyle Phillpots (PGA of Great Britain and Ireland) • IGCF Working Group: Dawes Marlatt and Paul Metzler (PGA of America), Geoff Stewart (PGA of Australia), Glenn Cundari and Morgan Court (PGA of Canada), Martin Hasenbein (PGA of Germany), Johan Hampf (PGA of Sweden), Tony Bennett (PGAs of Europe) and Mark Harrington (World Rugby and Chair of ASOIF Education and Development Group). They deserve special recognition and commendation for the time and expertise they devoted to the project and for producing such a successful outcome.
