Carlos C. Campbell's love affair with the Great Smoky Mountains lasted for morethan fifty years. One of the principal figures in the movement to have theSmokies established as a national park, Campbell helped to ensure that futuregenerations would enjoy the mountains just as he enjoyed them. As one of the foundingmembers of the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club, he hiked more than four thousandmiles of the park's trail system and participated in the marking of the Appalachian Trail. Today, due in part to Campbell's efforts, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the most visited destination in the national park system. In 1967, Campbell wrote Memories of Old Smoky. Though two previous books writtenor co-written by Campbell had sold well-- including Birth of a National Park in theGreat Smoky Mountains, one of the most significant records of the park's development todate-- Memories of Old Smoky only became available in a privately published edition after the author's death. Now, in this edition, Campbell's reminiscences, divided into sections on hiking, wildlife, people, sights, and others, become available to an even wider audience. Narrated in Campbell's unaffected, personable prose, the Smokies truly come alive on the page-- from its breathtaking panoramas, deep-cut gorges, waterfalls, and sunsets from Cliff Top.Part memoir and part guidebook, with plenty of humor and history to round outthe mix, Memories of Old Smoky is a testament to the beauty of the mountains by one ofthe Park's most ardent supporters.

Carlos C. Campbell (1892-1978) received the Horace Marden Albright Scenic Preservation Medal in 1966 and was made Honorary Park Ranger. He was author of Birth of a National Park in the Great Smoky Mountains and co-author of Great Smoky Mountain Wildflowers.
