While the people in Europe scurry through frozen streets wrapped up in their coats and scarves, you can stretch out your limbs on the white sandy beaches of the southernmost state of North America, and even bathe in the warm waters of the Gulf Stream. Ernst Marchel, a journalist living in the United States, writes on the history of the peninsula, from its discovery during "Pascua Florida" (Easter) 1513 by the Spanish conquistador Juan Ponce de Leon right up to the present day, telling of the indigenous Indian population, and explaining how the country was opened up to tourists.
