This is a book that gives a personal account of a short journey through China. It was a journey to an ancient, mysterious and beautiful land that appealed to my sense of adventure and I couldn't wait to visit it. It is a country that has such a rich dynastic history and culture.
This is a book that gives a personal account of a short journey through China. It was a journey to an ancient, mysterious and beautiful land that appealed to my sense of adventure and I couldn't wait to visit it. It is a country that has such a rich dynastic history and culture. The contrast of its modern face in Shanghai and its traditions going back thousands of years make it a real interesting mix. Its place names alone are exotic and make you want to see them. It is a complex country but you cannot help but stand in awe of some of its sights. Nothing can prepare you for standing on the Great Wall, seeing the vast pits containing the Terracotta Warriors or wandering through the Summer Palace. But also intriguing were the old traditional houses or hutongs, travelling 430km per hour on the Maglev, or accidently unearthing its Jewish history during the war years. The traditional sights were phenomenal but I found so much more on this trip. A journey I would highly recommend. The text is supported by sketches from the author's original photographs.
