This real-life adventure story follows palaeontologist John Long's trek of 700 kilometres through the uncharted territory of Antarctica. His account of his fossil-hunting expedition to the remote Transantarctic mountains reveals the excitement of discovery and the reality of being at the mercy of the elements. In the midst of the breathtaking yet deadly landscape, he experiences the human side of scientific endeavour, including being almost killed twice in one day and having to get on with the colleagues with whom he lived and worked in close proximity for months at a time.

Dr John Long is a palaentologist at the Western Australian Museum and is the author of a number of popular science books.
