A sound knowledge of the Mental Health Act 1983 is seen as vital for psychiatrists to function effectively in today's mental health services, particularly since the use of compulsory admission to hospital has risen considerably over the 1990s. The Act also has implications for care outside hospital and general practitioners are also regularly involved in using the Act and so need to be aware of its provisions. This training pack has been produced with financial support from the Department of Health and St Andrew's Hospital, Northampton. It is intended to support the development of better training for psychiatrists seeking approval under Section 12 of the Act and to support the continuing education of psyciatrists and GPs.
