It examines the four-decade-long evolution of the concept of sustainable development from the Stockholm Conference of 1972 until the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals in 2015. It brings forward a step-by-step guide for exploring the law-like quality of global norms from a legal positivist and legal pluralist perspective.

Dr Halil Göksan is a Legal Officer at the Department of Management Strategy, Policy and Compliance of the United Nations in New York. Before joining the UN Secretariat, Göksan worked as a Legal Officer for the UNRWA Dispute Tribunal and prepared a publicly available handbook on UN Administrative Law. Göksan's views in this book do not necessarily reflect those of the United Nations.
