The new law relating to children under the Children Act 1989 is covered in depth and includes: parental responsibility; welfare of the child; children in need; emergency protection orders; police powers; treatment of children in care; nurseries; and child minders. Community care provisions are included under the National Health and Community Care Act 1990 and covers the care of the sick, elderly and disabled; registration and regulation of independent sector care - residential homes, nursing homes and mental nursing homes.
