This book is about language, mind and consciousness. It traces lines of relevance from the philosophy of language to the philosophy of mind, and focuses on central contributors to disciplines of the cognitive sciences. Philosophers receiving particular attention include W.V. Quine, Donald Davidson, Hilary Putnam, Daniel Dennett and Jerry Fodor. The book is of special interest for professionals and university students in the philosophy of mind and language, and for those engaged with the concept of linguistic meaning, the philosophy of psychology, cognitive psychology and closely related fields. The organizing theme is a contextual approach to linguistic meaning and mental contents which builds on the early functional and structural psychology of William James and his students. The book anticipates a contemporary revival of central themes from Jamesian functional psychology. The French cognitive psychologist Stanislas Dehaene is featured to illustrate something of the scope of the revival.

Professor H.G. Callaway has published and lectured widely in the US and in Europe on the philosophy of language and meaning—and on the languages of science in particular. This includes 75 articles and reviews in philosophy journals including Dialectica and Erkenntnis. Prior books include Context for meaning and Analysis, A Critical Study in the Philosophy of Language (1993); a translation of W.V. Quine's Kant Lectures (2003); a volume of essays, Meaning without Analyticity (2008); and a critical edition of William James, A Pluralistic Universe (2008). More recent publications include A.S. Eddington, The Nature of the Physical World, An Annotated Edition (2014) and William James, Essays in Radical Empiricism: A Critical Edition (2023). An alumnus of Temple University, USA, Callaway holds a doctorate in philosophy and wrote his dissertation on Intentionality and Consciousness. He has taught at various American and European universities and at the University of Ibadan in Nigeria.
