With increasing urbanization and development of society, advancement in geotechnical technologies is essential to the construction of infrastructures. Geotechnical Investigation is the first step of applying scientific methods and engineering principles to obtain solutions to civil engineering problems. The studies presented in this volume deal with the attempts made by scholars and engineers to address the latest development in geotechnical engineering such as characterization of geomaterials, slope stability, tunneling, mitigation of geohazards, and some other geotechnical issues that are quite relevant in today's world. This volume is based on contributions to the the GeoChina International Conference on Civil & Transportation Infrastructures: From Engineering to Smart & Green Life Cycle Solutions -- Nanchang, China, 2021.

Dr. Meng-Chia Weng is a full professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at National Chiao Tung University, Taiwan. His main research interests are rock mechanics, landslides, constitutive modeling of geomaterials, discrete element method, and finite element method. He has authored 56 journal papers, 24 technical reports, and 90 conference papers. He is the associate editor of Journal of Materials of Civil Engineering, ASCE, the managing guest editor of Engineering Geology, and a member of the editorial board of Journal of Geoengineering.
Prof Shima Kawamura is a Professor of Graduate School of Engineering, Muroran Institute of Technology, Japan. He received his PhD in Department of Civil Engineering from Hokkaido University, Japan in 2000. His research interests include: Bearing capacity improvement of ground, Stability evaluation of slopes in cold regions, dynamic behavior of ground during earthquake, and mechanical behavior of volcanic soils. He is currently a member of American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), Japan Society of Civil Engineers (JSCE), The Japanese Geotechnical Society (JGS), International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE), and The International Geosynthetics Society (IGS). He is also active as editorial board for Soils and Foundations (JGS), and associate editors for Japanese Goetechnical Journal (JGS).

Prof Jianwen Dingis professor of Institute of Geotechnical Engineering School of Transportation,Southeast University. He was a visiting scholar in school ofcivil engineering, Purdue University from 04/2013 to 04/2014.His specialty is geotechnical engineering and his research interests are as follows: mechanical behavior &settlement analysis ofthe big-diameter and super-long piles, comprehensive treatment of dredged clays (consolidation; solidification;recycling), subgrade engineering in highway (road embankment&road subbase) andunderground engineering(tunnel; excavation engineering; subway). He is anactivemember of various academic societies. He has authored, co-authored 42 journal papers. He is in charge of 3 National Natural Science Foundation of China and many major engineering consulting projects.
