Radio telescopes have the potential of recording images in the universe at a resolution nearly 1,000 times higher than the Hubble Space telescope. To attain this resolution, astronomers rely on a technology called Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI). With the launch of the first VLBI satellite, Very Long Baseline Array has now come into actual operation. This, as well as other developments over the last 10 years, has increased the need for an update of this classic textbook on radio astronomy. The first two editions of this title was seen as the standard reference on the subject and this edition provides a comprehensive account today's techniques used in interferometry and radio astronomy.

Interferometry and Synthesis in Radio Astronomy, Third Edition, provides an excellent overview of most radio astronomical instrumentation and techniques.

A. RICHARD THOMPSON received his PhD from the University of Manchester in 1956. In 1973 he joined the National Radio Astronomy Observatory and has been holding since then different responsibilities including the Deputy Head of the Central Electronics Laboratory. Besides other duties he was the International Astronomical Union's representative to the International Telecommunications Union (ITU-R). JAMES M. MORAN, PhD, is a senior scientist at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory and Professor of Astronomy at Harvard University. In 2013, he received the Grote Reber Gold Medal for his pioneering work in the development and application of spectroscopic Very Long Baseline Interferometry. GEORGE W. SWENSON, Jr., PhD, is Professor Emeritus of Electrical Engineering and of Astronomy at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His research areas are remote sensing and space science, radio and optical wave propagation amongst others.
