This book’s aim is to present the series of steps that lead to General Relativity. To that end, an attempt is made to follow Einstein’s thinking and methods from when he first broached the subject in 1907, to his publishing of the paper entitled `The Foundation of the General Theory of Relativity’ in 1916, which effectively presented the completed theory. That paper represents the core of this book. The priority is to provide derivations for every step taken in that paper.
