Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Geophysical Monograph Series, Volume 23.
This volume is primarily an outgrowth of a major international program of cooperative research between earth scientists in the United States and their counterparts in Southeast Asia. Most of the research has been promoted and sponsored under the banner of Seatar, an acronym for 'Studies of East Asian Tectonics and Resources.' The program had its scientific inception at a workshop held in Bangkok in October 1973. Most of the U.S. Seatar research programs have been funded by the Office of the International Decade of Ocean Exploration (IDOE) of the National Science Foundation (NSF), but many closely related projects have been supported by other sections of the NSF, by the Office of Naval Research, and by others.
