Written before the collapse of the research program of the logical positivists and the resurgent interest in the development of scientific thought as exemplified in analyses of actual historical transitions, this book is unique in undertaking to elucidate the cognitive developments and their causes underlying the history of science. Beginning with a description of forms of primitive mentality, as exemplified historically in the earlier animistic, mythopoetic, and theogonic traditions, the present volume identifies the transformations in the thought processes inherent in the emergence and the growth of scientific rationalism from the Presocratics through Plato and Aristotle to Archimedes, the culminating scientific figure in the ancient world.

The Author: Richard H. Schlagel is Elton Professor of Philosophy at the George Washington University. Having earned a Bachelor of Science degree at Springfield College, he received an M.A. and a Ph.D. in philosophy from Boston University. In addition to numerous articles on the philosophy of science in professional journals, the first edition of Animism to Archimedes, Volume I of From Myth to the Modern Mind: A Study of the Origins and Growth of Scientific Thought was published by Peter Lang in 1985. Contextual Realism: A Meta-physical Framework for Modern Science was published in 1986 by Paragon House.

Contents: The purpose of the present volume is to contrast scientific rationalism with the earlier animistic, mythopoetic, and theogonic traditions, tracing the origins and the growth of scientific thought in the works of the Presocratics, Plato and Aristotle, to Archimedes.
