Hepatocellular carcinoma is one of the major malignancies in man and is related to the hepatitis B virus and non-A and non-B viruses. The discovery of serologic markers for hepatitus viruses two decades ago and recent advances in molecular biology and other technology have made previously fragmented knowledge on the topic more uniform. The Second International Symposium on Viral Hepatitis and Hepatocellular Carcinoma brought together 524 scientists from around the world. Many new findings were introduced such as animal models for hepadna viruses and hepatocellular cacinoma. Also touched on were techniques for early detection and management of this type of cancer. Effective means of control of viral hepatitis and hepatocellular carcinoma were discussed as well. Efficacy of the first generation vaccine after prolonged follow-up was presented, as was the control of hepatitis B at a national level.
