This volume is designed to help educators, practitioners and patients teach evidence-based medicine. Until the middle of the last century, most interventions in clinical practice were based on the experience of generations of physicians. The evolution of epidemiology, and subsequently clinical epidemiology, resulted in methods that allowed the objective critique of all therapies used in clinical practice. Multi-centre/randomized clinical trials have made it possible to answer fundamental questions about common clinical interventions. For many reasons, the knowledge gained from good quality clinical practice. Policies derived from critical appraisal of the literature needs to be translated into recommendations that are understandable to patients. Conveying this information to clinicians is a principal mission of this title. The book is organized into two parts. The first 12 chapters outline the basic skills and knowledge required to teach and learn about critical thinking applied to medical literature. The second section consists of the application of critical thinking to 27 common questions encountered in family/general practice.
Section 1 Teaching and learning critical thinking in family and general practice: finding published evidence relevant to clinical practice; using two-by-two tables to assess diagnostic tests; how prevalence of disease in a practice influences the value tests; advising patients about prognosis; how to be confident about a cause-and-effect relationship; will a medical intervention meaningfully benefit a patient; how to determine if a therapy is cost effective; will this review article help me to better understand my patients' problems?; choosing guidelines with confidence; evaluating the quality of a meta-analysis; assessing a study on quality of care; teaching and learning about evidence-based medicine; teaching and learning with patients: the Physician-Patient Partnership Papers (PPPP). Section 2 Applying critical thinking in family and general practice: Physician-Patient Partnership Papers for pregnancy and childbirth; Physician-Patient Partnership Papers for newborns and young children; Physician-Patient Partnership Papers for cardiovascular disease; Physician-Patient Partnership Papers for cancer detection; Physician-Patient Partnership Papers for other common problems.
