Mapped to the 2018 NMC Standards, this book introduces core aspects of the social sciences and their application to nursing practice. Alongside essential contributions from sociology and psychology, the book goes beyond this to provide readers with a solid grounding in politics and political awareness, health promotion, advocacy and more.
What are the social sciences and how are they relevant to nursing? How can I apply them to my practice?
This book introduces the essential social science that you need in order to register and practice effectively as a nurse. Contributions from the social sciences enable you to better understand the world view of your patients and service users, as well as the wider social, cultural and political landscape in which they live and you provide care. This book will help you apply this knowledge to your everyday practice. Be it providing holistic person-centred care, advocating for your patients and their communities, or contributing to service improvement, understanding the social sciences is key to a nursing career that truly makes a difference.

Key features:
- Fully mapped to the NMC standards of proficiency for registered nurses (2018)
- Explores social science’s contribution to key aspects of your study including sociology, psychology, research, and health promotion
- Case studies, activities and student insights illustrate theory and concepts in real life nursing practice

Dr Mark Molesworth is a Senior Lecturer with subject leader responsibilities across a cognate group of programmes aligned with adult nursing and healthcare. His research interests are focused upon pedagogy and curriculum development within nurse education.  He has undertaken extensive research exploring the interface between nursing and other academic disciplines. Dr Iain Atherton trained as a nurse before going back to university to study development and then demography. He is fascinated by how our lives are shaped and shape the societies in which we live. His clinical work and research have led him to develop critical thinking about the links between nursing practice and wider society. He teaches health care practitioners statistics and population health. His research uses ′big data′ to answer pressing questions on topics including the circumstances of people at the end of life, the implications of demographic change for the nursing profession, and the implications of social circumstances and place for survival after a diagnosis of cancer.
