A detailed training resource for trainers, personnel managers and anyone else responsible for the personal safety of employees. It is designed to help them make staff aware of the sorts of risks that they face; help them lessen those risks; and, in the last resort, offer them self-defence skills.
During the 1980's and into the 90's the rise on the number of assaults on employees in the course of their work outpaced the growth in violent crime in general. Staff in a whole range of organizations - Government departments, public transport, teaching, the health service, the entertainment sector, the security industry, even librarians now find themselves, through their work, at risk of physical violence, verbal abuse and harassment. Personal Safety is a complete training resource manual for trainers, personnel managers and anyone responsible for the personal safety of employees. Published in conjunction with the Suzy Lamplugh Trust - the leading authority on personal safety - the manual is designed to help them increase staff awareness of the risks they face; teach staff how to lesson those risks; avoid potentially dangerous situations and, as a last resort, defend themselves in the face of violent attack. Many of the difficulties associated with the problem of violence at work stem from ignorance, preconceptions or an unwillingness to recognize the problem on the part of both the employer and the employee.
The Health and Safety at Work Act now places a clear responsibility on teh employer to provide for an employee's personal safety. "Personal Safety" aims to put the problems of aggression and violence at work into perspective with background information from a whole range of industries. It provides the tools for an employer to identify and quantify the risks and develop an effective policy and practical measures for minimizing the risk to employees; background, advice and practical exercises to help employees develop the personal skills to control their environment and defuse potentially violent situations or people; and guidance for trainers on how to put the material across, with a range of suggested training programmes for different levels of staff.
