Description
This weighty tome is truly a complete and
up-to-date reference for clinical laboratory management.
Purpose
The purpose is to provide
"comprehensive, practical information and guidelines for healthcare
management in the 21st century." These worthy objectives are well
met by this book.
Audience
The book is intended for anyone involved in
clinical laboratories, from students to medical, clinical laboratory
scientists, pathology or laboratory medicine residents. It should also be of
interest to administrators in healthcare organizations or anyone in
healthcare-related businesses to gain insight into the complexities of
effectively managing a clinical laboratory.
Features
First of all, this book is the size and
weight of ASM's Manual of Clinical Microbiology back when it was a single
volume, or Henry's Clinical Diagnosis and Management by Laboratory Methods,
22nd edition, McPherson and Pincus (Elsevier, 2011) or Tietz Textbook of
Clinical Chemistry and Molecular Diagnostics, 5th edition, Burtis et al.
(Elsevier,2012) -- over 1,000 pages, and every page is worthwhile. This is the
book to burrow into if you really want to learn clinical laboratory management.
It covers all aspects in substantial detail, and I am not aware of another
similar book in this field. There is a lot of really valuable information. The
section on managerial leadership with chapters on motivating through
intelligent leadership, effective meetings, and conflict management make me
wish I had this during residency to use as a foundational reference instead of
having to learn all this on the job over the past few decades. The sections on
financial management, generation revenue, profitability, contribution, and
reimbursement -- where else would you find this information specifically for
clinical laboratories and all in one place? And the final section, on the
future of clinical laboratories with major contributions from Paul Bachner and
Des Burke, legends in laboratory medicine, sharing their perspectives? Of
course, with Lynne Garcia as editor in chief, this book meets her exacting
standards for excellence. Many of the chapters come with very instructive case
studies which I used to reality-check my own management style. The chapter on
performance appraisals and competency assessment has fantastic forms.
Assessment
All in all, this is a wonderful book. Sorry
to say, I was unaware of the first edition. Meanwhile, I highly, highly, highly
recommend this edition for anyone with any laboratory management
responsibility. It is simply superb.
