Practitioners should always develop exercise prescription with consideration for an individual’s health history, but this is especially true for individuals with a history of chronic disease. Exercise Prescription for Special Populations delves into how practitioners should prescribe exercise for those with conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and hypertension, as well as for those who are pregnant, wheelchair-dependent, or adolescents.

Exercise Prescription for Special Populations utilizes a hybrid approach, combining elements of a traditional textbook and a “field guide” reference, with summative tables at the end of each chapter fulfilling the latter function. This reference aspect makes this text an ideal fit not just for upper-level undergraduate and graduate-level Exercise Science students, but also for exercise physiologists and personal fitness trainers working in fitness centers, hospitals, and in-/out-patient cardiac rehabilitation programs.

Brian C. Leutholtz is a clinical professor working with students in the graduate and undergraduate program in exercise physiology at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. Dr.' Leutholtz’s role at Baylor has been to improve the graduate curriculum and complete the development of a PhD program by teaching and creating new graduate-level courses in sports nutrition and exercise prescription for special populations. He has previous experience as the director and founder of the Old Dominion University Therapeutic Exercise Program for Chronic Disease (TEMPO) in Norfolk, Virginia; has worked as a consultant for a managed care team providing exercise and diet evaluation and education in Virginia Beach; and served as the coordinator of the graduate program in exercise physiology at Baylor University. Prior to graduation in 1992 from Michigan State University, where he earned a PhD specializing in the study of clinical exercise physiology and cardiovascular physiology, Dr.' Leutholtz completed a 4-year doctoral fellowship training program at Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan, in clinical exercise physiology. As a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), Dr. Leutholtz has earned recognition at the highest level of certification by the ACSM as a Clinical Program Director, and has recently added to his list of book publications a co-authored book entitled Exercise Prescription: A Case Study Approach to the ACSM Guidelines, Second Edition. In this book, the long-standing ACSM equations were improved, and a new term, the VO2 reserve, was adopted by the ACSM.
