As problems caused by environmental exploitation increase, related health issues are also becoming a source of major worldwide concern. Containing many of the papers presented at the Second International Conference on the Impact of Environmental Factors on Health, this volume includes contributions from a variety of different countries. These report on studies carried out using modern scientific methodology in order to understand better and try to eliminate or considerably reduce hazardous factors from the environment and minimize associated health risks. A wide range of issues related to health risk are considered and the papers featured are divided into the following sections: Water Quality Issues; Air Pollution; Radiation Fields; Accident and Man-Made Risks; Aral Sea Problems; Risk Analysis; Analysis of Urban Road Transportation Systems in Emergency Conditions.
Section 1 Water quality issues: Geogenic factors affecting the selenium (IV) distribution in sediments from Madeira River basin, Brazil; Chemical composition and water quality of surface waters in Ukraine; Ecological state of the upper Dniepr and its basin and prospects for the future; Monitoring of water quality and hydrodynamic model of pollution load in Dniepr transboundary river. Section 2 Air pollution: The influence of constructional features and of buildings on indoor Rn entry: experimental research in Catania city, Italy; Evaluation of PM in Flanders; Comparison of air-purification characteristics for potted Golden Hahnii and Warneckii. Section 3 Radiation fields: Application of magnetic fields to the decontamination and cleansing of Co-60 contaminated oils, through the extraction of ferromagnetic sludge; Magnetic field reduction by means of active shielding techniques. Section 4 Accident and man-made risks: Environmental impact of hazardous waste landfill breakdown; Mine haul road fugitive dust emission and exposure characterization; Measuring low concentrations of asbestos fibers in environmental air samples from asbestos roofed houses; Are people willing to pay to avoid contamination? Evidence from housing values in Belgium; Numerical assessment for fire safety in school buildings; Measurement and evaluation of whole-body vibrations. Section 5 Aral Sea problems: Comparison of the incidence of diarrhoeal diseases in two regions of the Aral Sea area, Uzbekistan; Environmental disruption and human health: reduction of the Aral Sea and the residents' health problems. Section 6 Risk analysis: Risk analysis of persistent chlorinated organic compounds, dioxins and PCBs in Japan; The use of pollutants fate simulation models in the risk analysis; Preliminary risk assessment of old landfills in Italy. Section 7 Analysis of urban road transportation systems in emergency conditions: Urban transportation system analysis in emergency conditions; Evolution of an urban transportation system in emergency conditions: analysis through a pseudo-dynamic assignment model; Use of a mesoscopic dynamic assignment model for approaching the evolution of an urban transportation system in emergency conditions; Microscopic approach for the evaluation of an urban transport system in emergency conditions; Analysis and comparison of several urban road transportation assignment models in emergency conditions.
