This award-winning guide provides child care directors, teachers, and caregivers with essential information on the prevention and management of infectious diseases in group care settings. The newly revised and updated fifth edition is aligned with the most recent version of the premier AAP source of information on infectious diseases, Red Book®: 2018-2021 Report of the Committee on Infectious Diseases, 31st Edition. The robust section of more than 55 quick reference fact sheets on common infectious diseases and symptoms has been expanded to include a new sheet on croup. Additionally, the forms have been updated to align with Caring for Our Children: National Health and Safety Performance Standards; Guidelines for Early Care and Education Programs, 4th Edition, and there is a new form, “Infections Caused by Interactions of Humans With Pets and Wild Animals.” As always, the guide is easy to use, providing clear, authoritative guidance on limiting the spread of infection.

Dr Susan S. Aronson, MD, FAAP,  is a pediatric advisor for the Early Childhood Education Linkage System-Healthy Child Care Pennsylvania (ECELS) at the Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (PA AAP). ECELS is a statewide quality improvement program that Dr. Sue founded in 1989. She is the author of Model Child Care Health Policies, the PA AAP publication distributed by the AAP and available for free download on the ECELS website along with online curricula and resource materials for early educators about health and safety issues.  She is a contributor to the widely-used Caring for Our Children: National Health and Safety Performance Standards; Guidelines for Early Care and Education Programs. Dr. Sue is the author and guest faculty for an online, 3-college-credit Child Care Health Advocate course for early educators.  Since 2007, the course has been offered fall and spring terms at Northampton Community College under a renewable agreement of the college with the PA AAP. Dr. Sue is the author/editor of Healthy Young Children, 5th Edition (2012), published by the National Association for the Education of Young Children. Her column "Ask Dr. Sue" was published in Exchange magazine for many years.  She is a retired clinical professor of pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania and The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Timothy R. Shope, MD, MPH, FAAP, is a professor of pediatrics at the UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. Dr Shope is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics Council on Early Childhood. He served as a child care health consultant for the Navy and Department of Defense for over 11 years, an editor of a significant portion of Caring for Our Children: National Health and Safety Performance Standards; Guidelines for Early Care and Education Programs, 3rd edition, and a co-author of several online curricula for educators about managing infectious diseases in early education and school settings.
