Immunohematology reference laboratories function within a highly specialized area of the blood banking community. In recognition of this fact, the AABB continues to promote standards in this area with this publication. The standards are based on the AABB Quality System Essentials (QSE), which provide a foundation for a quality management system and this version includes updated quality and technical requirements. The Immunohematology Reference Laboratory Standards Program Unit updated and expanded several of the technical requirements from the previous edition, including deviations and non-conforming products and services, a set of defined computer systems standards for Immunohematology Reference Laboratories, an updated list of required inventory resources and new requirements for participation on the American Rare Donor Program.
