This book describes and discusses the different restorative options for managing carious lesions in children with primary and mixed dentition. The aim is to provide practitioners with thorough, up-to-date information that will improve their clinical practice. The opening chapters present a comprehensive overview regarding diagnosis of carious lesions, risk assessment, child behavior and development, and behavioral management. The importance of oral health promotion and prevention in controlling lesion progression and maintaining oral health is reviewed. The impact of various factors on clinician decision making is then explained in detail, examples including the type of dentition (primary versus permanent), the clinical and radiographic aspect of the dentine carious lesion (noncavitated or cavitated), and whether the lesion is associated with a developmental defect. Guidance is provided on selection of nonoperative versus operative interventions, and the restorative materials most frequently used in pediatric dentistry are fully described, highlighting their advantages and disadvantages. Readers will also find an informative series of cases, with explanation of the choices in terms of materials and approach.

Soraya Coelho Leal is Associate Professor in the Department of Dentistry, School of Health University of Brasília, Brazil, where she has been teaching since 1999. She gained her PhD in 2003 and since 2004 has been responsible for supervising master's and PhD students. From 1999 to 2010 she also served as a teacher on the postgraduate specialization course in Pediatric Dentistry for the Brazilian Dental Association. Dr. Leal has been an invited speaker at international meeting worldwide. Her research has focused on saliva, atraumatic restorative approaches, minimum intervention dentistry, and evidence-based dentistry, and she has cooperated in these areas with researchers at Radboud University, Nijmegen, the Netherlands and University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa. Dr. Leal has authored numerous articles in international peer-reviewed journals

Eliana Mitsue Takeshita is Adjunct Professor in the Department of Dentistry, School of Health University of Brasília, UNB, Brazil. She was previously Adjunct Professor in the Department of Dentistry, Federal University of Sergipe and Titular Professor in the Department of Dentistry, Tiradentes University. Dr. Takeshita graduated in Dentistry in 2003 at and completed her PhD in 2010 at São Paulo State University. She worked as a visiting researcher in the Department of Cariology, Endodontics, and Pedodontics, at Academisch Centrum Tandheelkunde Amsterdam, the Netherlands, in 2009 and first joined the School of Health University of Brasília in 2011. Her research focuses on caries prevention and fluoride.
