Within skeletal muscle there exists a complex interplay of chemical, electrical and mechanical events at macroscopic, cellular and molecular levels. This volume presents an examination of the basic physiology and mechanics of skeletal muscle.
Within skeletal muscle there exists a complex interplay of chemical, electrical and mechanical events at macroscopic, cellular and molecular levels, and as a result, modelling this complex biological tissue is difficult. The first part of this volume presents an examination of the basic physiology and mechanics of skeletal muscle, and builds from this to discuss existing models, including the conceptual biological frameworks and implementation of the Hill and Huxley models.

Part 1: Basic introduction to skeletal muscle; modelling skeletal muscle using simple geometric shapes - biological considerations; Hill and Huxley type models - biological considerations; rheological and structural models - mathematical considerations. Part 2: Fundamentals of mechanics; towards a complete muscle model; movement control. Appendices: solving non-linear problems; the finite difference method.
