Learning Matters Ltd (Verlag)

With the number of people requiring palliative and end of life care steadily increasing, it is the responsibility of every nurse, regardless of specialism, to know how to provide high quality care to this group of people. Yet caring for those nearing the end of life can throw up complex issues, including handling bereavement, cultural and ethical issues, delivering care in a wide variety of settings, symptom management and also ensuring your own emotional resilience. This book is specifically designed to equip nursing students and non-specialists with the essential knowledge in relation to the care and management of people nearing the end of life.
Jane Nicol is Head of Education and Learning at St Richards Hospice and a Registered General Nurse. During her career she has worked across a range of clinical settings in both primary and secondary care, enabling her to develop a broad knowledge and skill base. She previously taught pre-registration nursing students at the University of Worcester and University of Birmingham. Jane’s specialist areas of teaching are the care and management of people living with long term conditions and palliative and end-of-life care. Dr Brian Nyatanga is Senior lecturer at the Institute of Health and Society, Applied Professional Studies, and Director for The Centre for Palliative Care, which he recently developed jointly with a local hospice. He teaches palliative care and research methods across the university programmes and to international students here and abroad. Brian is aware of the emotional demands of caring for people at the end of life and believes in structured social support for practitioners. His doctoral research thesis investigated on death anxiety and burnout among palliative nurses. He is well published, with over 25 years of clinical and educational experience in palliative care.
