This text covers all modern noninvasive techniques in order to assess the mechanical and physiological properties of human skin in health and disease. The first part deals with basic bioengineering methods such as the quanitification of the surface microrelief by imaging analysis, measurements of transepidermal water loss and blood flow, determination of skin thickness and elasticity, assessment of erythema by colourimetry, and estimation of sebum production. The second section presents the varied clinical applications of bioengineering methodologies, namely dry skin, ageing, photobiology, acne, eczema, psoriasis, arterial diseases and other conditions.
