The contributors review current technologies for imaging the myocardium, vessel lumen, and vessel wall, assess the state of the art in instrumentation, discuss evolving clinical needs, and offer recommendations for research to meet these needs. Imaging techniques discussed include ultrafast CT, PET, SPECT, magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy, ultrasound, digital subtraction angiography, magnetic resonance angiography, functional echocardiography, fluorescence spectroscopy, and Doppler echocardiography. Various studies are proposed to increase the utility of these techniques for characterizing myocardial status, evaluating the severity of vascular disease, and assessing the progression of atherosclerosis.
