This book represents the current state of the art in the science of dentifrices and highlights the clinical and biological aspects. Emphasis is placed on the chemistry of dentifrice products and how they are evaluated in clinically proven trials. The book begins with an insight into the historical aspects of dentifrices followed by overviews on oral hygiene measures, the role of dentifrices in relation to plaque control as a means of reducing the risk of dental caries and periodontal disease. Sections are devoted to anti-calculus agents, the response of oral micro-organisms to dentifrice agents such as fluoride metal ions and various detergents and to the sensitivity of teeth. The book is a collaborative effort by many of the leading dental scientists in Europe, Scandinavia, and the United States.
Hare's teeth to fluorides, historical aspects of dentifrice use; the significance to toothpaste in oral hygiene; behavioural aspects of oral hygiene; halitosis; dentifrices in the control of dental caries; laboratory and human studies to elucidate the mechanism of action of fluoride-containing dentifrices; mechanistic interactions of dentifrices with de- and remineralization; uptake of fluoride into enamel and caries reduction; relationships and a pilot experiment in rats; fluoride concentrations in dentifrices in relation to efficacy, side-effects and salivary clearance; oral fluoride reservoirs and their relationship to anticaries efficacy; root surface caries in humans - a review; the use of dentifrices in the treatment of dental caries; the influence of saliva constituents and properties on enamel remineralization in situ; fluoride in saliva and plaque in relation to fluoride in drinking water and in dentifrices; metal ions in oral hygiene produces; considerations concerning the sodium lauryl sulphate content of dentifrices; human clinical studies of anti-plaque and anti-gingivitis agents dosed from a dentifrice; mechanisms of action of clinically proven anti-plaque agents; recent advances in plaque/gingivitis control; the evaluation of toothpaste products in promoting gingival health; chemical plaque by surface-active substances; tartar control dentifrices; effects of sodium pyrophosphate and ethane hydroxy diphosphonate on albumin adsorption; fluoride dentifrices - a possible cariostatic mechanism; oral ecology - a critical review; microbiological aspects of dentifrices; dentifrices for the treatment of dentine hypersensitivity; abrasive and chemical effects of dentifrices.
