Covers general information on equipment and techniques as well as instruction on the management of acute post-operative and other problems.
This book is designed to assist all those who are concerned with the hour-by-hour care of the urological patient. Its purpose is to act as a readily available and easy-to-use guide to the immediate management of the many problems that occur in the wards and the Emergency Department. This pocket-book contains detailed descriptions of equipment used by those responsible for the management of urological emergencies, and a comprehensive review of problems encountered and how to deal with them. It will, for example, help doctors new to urology to cope with the blocked catheter or to manage the TUR syndrome. It will help ward nurses in understanding the techniques of irrigation and drainage and indicate what action should be taken to prevent a minor problem becoming more serious.

Part 1 In general (equipment and techniques): catheters; catheterization; urine bags; bladder irrigation; urethral dilators. Part 2 In the ward (management of acute post-operative and other problems): introduction to the urology ward; the blocked catheter; post-operative bleeding; DVT and pulmonary embolus; slight but persistent haematuria; TUR syndrome; failure of catheter balloon to deflate; "catheter spasm"; analgesics; urinary tract infection; acute septicaemia; pre-operative antibiotics; drug affecting bladder function. Part 3 In the accident and emergency department (the initial management): the referred patient; common acute systems and their early management; to admit or investigate as an outpatient; retention; trauma; epididymo-orchitis and torsion of testis; renal or ureteric colic; intravenous urography.
