Deals with the older patient and failure of primary treatment. The long-term results of various types of primary treatment are assessed and problems of secondary treatment are discussed. The problem of patient compliance with cleft palate regimes and prosthodontics is also addressed.
Cleft lip and palate are common and distressing human birth defects but much still needs to be learnt about the care and management of these conditions and the long-term consequences of treatment. This work provides a forum for the development of a better understanding of the problems involved and for new ideas to be developed to significantly improve the treatment of this condition. All aspects including plastic surgery, speech therapy, oral and maxillofacial surgery, growth, psychology and paediatrics are analyzed and discussed as well as treatment failures and prosthetic rehabilitation. This second volume deals with the older patient and failure of primary treatment. Using computer graphics, the three-dimensional long-term results of various types of primary treatment are assessed and the problems of secondary treatment are discussed. The problem of patient compliance with cleft palate regimes and prosthodontics is addressed and the prevention of orofacial defects examined. The future developments, including the prospects for inter-unit co-operation, are also explored. The work includes discussions between experts with differing viewpoints and sometimes controversial opinions.
It is intended to be a useful reference for those involved in the treatment of cleft lip and palate patients including plastic surgeons, orthodontists, speech therapists, paediatricians, psychologists, radiologists and medical geneticists.
