In recent years, significant advances have been made in research in the field of the peripheral actions of dopamine, namely on its importance in the development and maintenance of some pathological conditions. This volume offers a review of the current knowledge on the peripheral actions of dopamine; the role of renal dopamine in water and electrolyte homeostasis; and the relevance of peripheral dopaminergic mechanisms in the development and maintenance of some cardiovascular and renal disorders. It confronts both basic scientists and clinicians with important questions for the future. The main topics under discussion concern the sources, metabolism and fate of endogenous dopamine; dopamine receptors, their molecular biology and transduction pathways; localization and involvement in the control of sympathatic activity; dopamine, blood pressure and sodium homeostasis; and finally on the utilization of dopamine receptor agonists and dopamine prodrugs in cardiovascular and renal diseases.
