This title is first prize winner - Basic and Clinical Sciences 2002 BMA Medical Book Awards. A clearly written, highly illustrated textbook of neuroanatomy which tackles the subject from the clinical perspective, emphasising what needs to be known in order to make good clinical decisions and reinforcing this message through clinical boxes, which appear throughout the text. Some neuroscience background is also included and the design is modern and attractive to appeal to even the most reluctant of students faced with the sometimes daunting task of learning neuroanatomy! An already well-established text, this new edition has had a major overhaul - it has been totally rewritten and all the artwork is new and now in full-colour throughout.
Turlough FitzGerald is Emeritus Professor of Anatomy at the National
University of Ireland in Galway. He was previously Associate Professor of
Anatomy at the University of Washington medical school in Seattle and at St.
Louis University medical school in Missouri. He was also Lecturer in Anatomy at St Thomas's Hospital medical school in London and at NUI medical school in Cork, Ireland.
He spent 17 years on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Anatomy.
Membership of ASME (Association for Study of Medical Education) fostered his
interest in undergraduate medical education. His main research interest has
been the innervation of muscle and skin. For relaxation, he busies himself in
his one-acre garden, where he holds Open Days for charity each July.
Jean Folan-Curran is Turlough's successor to the Anatomy chair at NUI
Galway. Prior to taking the Chair, Jean worked at the Karolinska Institutet
in Stockholm, at the University of Heidelberg medical school and at the
University of Oregon medical school. Her research interests are the autonomic
nervous system and visceral afferents. Her favourite outdoor activity for many
years has been athletics, including competing in triathlons. Jean was the
first Irish woman to run an official marathon!
