This book draws a comprehensive approach to digital manufacturing through computer-aided design (CAD) and reverse engineering content complemented by basic CNC machining and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM), 3D printing, and additive manufacturing (AM) knowledge. The reader is exposed to a variety of subjects including the history, development, and future of digital manufacturing, a comprehensive look at 3D printing and AM, a comparative study between 3D printing and AM and CNC machining, and computer-aided engineering (CAE) along with 3D scanning. Applications of 3D printing and AM are presented as well as multiple special topics including design for 3D printing and AM (DfAM), costing, sustainability, environmental, safety, and health (EHS) issues. Contemporary subjects such as bio-printing, intellectual property (IP) and engineering ethics, virtual prototyping including augmented, virtual, and mixed reality (AR/VR/MR), and industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) are also covered.
Each chapter comes with in-practice exercises and end-of-chapter questions, which can be used as home-works as well as hands-on or software-based laboratory activities. End-of-chapter questions are of three types mainly: review questions which can be answered by reviewing each chapter, research questions which need to be answered by conducting literature reviews and additional research, and discussion questions. In addition, some of the chapters include relevant problems or challenges which may require additional hands-on efforts. Most of the hands-on and practical content is driven by the authors' previous experiences. The authors also encourage readers to help improve this book and its exercises by contacting them.

Biography - Arif Sirinterlikci, Ph.D., CMfgE Arif Sirinterlikci is a University Professor of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering at Robert Morris University (RMU) School of Engineering, Mathematics, and Science (SEMS). At RMU, he served in different administrative roles including Head of Engineering Department, Associate Dean of Research and Outreach at RMU SEMS, and most recently as the Senior Director of RMU Center of Innovation and Outreach (CIO). He holds BS and MS degrees, both in Mechanical Engineering from Istanbul Technical University in Turkey and his Ph.D. is in Industrial and Systems Engineering from the Ohio State University. He has also been a Certified Manufacturing Engineer (CMfgE), awarded by the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME), since 2016. Dr. Sirinterlikci was actively involved in SME serving in its Journals Committee, and Manufacturing Education and Research (MER) Community Steering Committee. He also served as an officer of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) Manufacturing Division between 2003-2011 including its Chair. He is one of the original grant writers of the winning proposal/founders of the U.S. Government's America Makes Institute. His teaching and research interests lie in 3D scanning, 3D printing and additive manufacturing, product design and development including biomedical device development, industrial automation and robotics including mixed reality and Internet of Things (IoT) applications, computer-aided engineering (CAE) in manufacturing processes, and entertainment technology. Dr. Sirinterlikci has over 130 conference papers and publications, trade and scientific journal articles, and book chapters to his record, a few being recognized as best paper nominees by the ASEE Manufacturing and Engineering Technology Divisions and his Rapid Prototyping Journal environmental, health, safety issues (EHS) paper winning a highly commended paper award from the Emerald Literati Network in 2016. He is a teaching professor who tries to follow the teacher/scholar model by engaging his students in his research by bringing his research to his classroom. 3 of his students recently won the Italian Technology Awards (ITA) in two consecutive years, 2018 and 2019, and 4 groups of his students earned provisional patents.
Biography, Yalcin Ertekin, Ph.D., CMfgE, CQE Yalcin Ertekin is a clinical professor in the College of Engineering, Department of Engineering Leadership and Society at Drexel University, Philadelphia, and serves as the Associate Department Head for Undergraduate Studies for the Engineering Technology program. He received his BS degree from Istanbul Technical University in Turkey, an MSc in Production Management from the University of Istanbul, an MS in Engineering Management, and an MS and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of MissouriRolla. Dr. Ertekin has also been a Certified Manufacturing Engineer (CMfgE), awarded by the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) since 2001, and a Certified Quality Engineer (CQE) awarded by the American Society for Quality (ASQ) since 2004.
