Image scanning, in which existing illustrations are transformed into digital files, is a skill that many Windows users have not fully mastered, but which is essential for running an effective desktop publishing operation. This is a concise introduction to scanning concepts and techniques.
While most desktop publishing to date has been performed on the Macintosh platform, increasing numbers of users are learning how to set type, create illustrations and scan images on the Windows platform. Image scanning, in which existing illustrations are transformed into digital files, is a skill that many Windows users have not fully mastered, but which is essential for running an effective desktop publishing operation. This guide contains a brief introduction to scanning concepts and basic scanning techniques. It uses a question-and-answer format with illustrations to outline the finer points of producing high quality desktop scans, as well as the issues regarding multimedia, film recorder and video output. The emphasis of the text is on software and techniques, although no specific hardware recommendations are made. Finally, the text covers the fundamentals of placing scanned images in documents and printing them, including the conversion of image files from the Mac platform for printing in Windows systems.

LUISA SIMONE, former executive editor of PC Magazine, is a freelance writer and consultant. She teaches Windows desktop publishing at the Pratt Institute Continuing Education Program in New York City.
