Tells the tale of middle-aged pawnbroker-poet from the land of Poictesme who takes us on an amorous journey through increasingly fantastical realms, seducing women wherever he goes - even the devil's wife.
"Jurgen" tells the tale of middle-aged pawnbroker-poet from the land of Poictesme who takes us on an amorous journey through increasingly fantastical realms, seducing women wherever he goes - even the devil's wife. Sexual and hilarious, James Branch Cabell's cult epic is a classic satire that has proved a major influence for fantasy writers ever since it was first published."Jurgen" was denounced as obscene on its original publication, an accusation which served only to make the book famous, and Cabell an icon for progressivism. The influence of Cabell as a writer has proven to be greater than his notoriety - his fans include Robert A Heinlein (whose novel "Stranger in a Strange Land" is patterned after "Jurgen"), Fritz Leiber, and James Blish. Neil Gaiman, bestselling author of "American Gods", "Anansi Boys", and the legendary comedy "Sandman", calls Cabell 'far and away my favourite forgotten American writer'.
