Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt is the author of three luminous collections of short stories including bestselling The Most Beautiful Book in the World (Europa, 2009, available from Turnaround). The question at the centre of all of these works is the same: What is happiness and how do we attain it? In this collection, two lovers secretly adore the child they can never have; a concentration camp survivor finds inner peace thanks to the love of a faithful dog; a man learns to love his wife by listening to the memories of her first husband; and a mother rediscovers love for her child .

Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt is one of Europe's most popular and acclaimed authors and playwrights. His many novels and story collections include The Most Beautiful Book in the World (Europa, 2009), Oscar & the Lady in Pink, and Monsieur Ibrahim and the Flowers of the Koran. A keen music lover, Schmitt has also translated into French The Marriage of Figaro and Don Giovanni from the original Italian. In 2001, he was awarded the French Academy's Grand Prix du Theatre. Schmitt divides his time between Paris, France, and Belgium. Award-winning translator Howard Curtis has worked on more than sixty books from French, Italian and Spanish. Among his recent translations for Europa are works by Jean-Claude Izzo and Santiago Gamboa.
