Antiphonaria

The present volume of essays had its origins in a workshop held in Regensburg from 27 September to 1 October 2006. The workshop was organised as part of a three-year research project supported by the TransCoop-Programm of the Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung in cooperation with the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.
The research project bears the title “Liturgical antiphoners of the Middle Ages”, “Antiphonaria” forshort. It was conceived with the purpose of examining past and present research into antiphoners and breviaries of the Middle Ages, with a view to coordinating research activity and developing new research methods. The workshop brought together a number in scholars who have made outstanding contributions to our knowledge of the sources of chants for the Divine Office.
The attention of the workshop was centred on manuscript sources and their interrelationships, but the nature of the chants themselves, their liturgical function and melodic character, were also discussed. A final session of the workshop was devoted to discussing the possibilities for compiling catalogues of antiphoners and notated breviaries for the Répertoire internationale des sources musicales (RISM).
The articles now published are in most cases the papers read at the workshop or developed from them. They are printed in alphabetical order by author. Thematically they span several different areas of investigation.
