David Almond won several awards for his widely-published adult short stories, before turning to children's novels. He grew up near the River Tyne, and now lives in Newcastle with his family. David says, 'Writing can be difficult, but sometimes it really does feel like a kind of magic. I think that stories are living things - among the most important things in the world.' He is winner of the Whitbread Children's Book of the Year and the Carnegie Medal, (for SKELLIG) and Smarties Award Silver Medal winner (for KIT'S WILDERNESS).
