From the first submarine attack carried out during the Revolutionary War to powerful raiders that devastated Japan's merchant marine, here is a concise and yet fascinating history of U.S. Subs at war.The authors are both very experienced divers who have combined their knowledge of several reachable wrecks with detailed historical research to accurately tell the story with hundreds of photos facts and figures.Some of the wrecks are within easy reach of the sport diver, while others are far more challenging. Some are largely intact while some have yet to be fully explored. Each story is a microcosm of the tale of the U.S. Submarine as a formidable weapon at sea.
Fourteen submarine wrecks are pinpointed and accurately described, alongside a short history of all 52 American submarines lost in World War Two. The loss of a further 50 submarines to peacetime accident, gunnery practice etc. is also examined. This edition benefits from an addendum that updates the story of the HL Hunley, recently salvaged from the waters off Charlestown.
