These behaviours don’t strongly interfere in small, everyday conversations, such as when we run into our neighbours or have a chat at the office. But when there are significant matters at stake, and when a conflict could be resolved or reignited by the tenor of a conversation, they can cause significant damage. They allow us to pretend not to notice people who are really damaged, and who, on the deepest, most personal level, just crave being listened to.
In DEEP LISTENING, Emily Kasriel explores the barriers that prevent us from respectful, Deep Listening and explains how to overcome them. In the book, Emily will show how Deep Listening is transformational, not transactional: instead of listening to extract information, we listen openly to learn more about the person speaking—and ourselves.
Emily Kasriel is a London-based expert who has worked for decades for the BBC, while at the same time developing a significant reputation as an authority on Deep Listening. Emily has researched Deep Listening and social entrepreneurship as a Senior Visiting Research Fellow at King’s College London Policy Institute, and has been a Practitioner in Residence at the London School of Economics, and a Visiting Fellow at Said Business School at the University of Oxford. Recently, she developed a season of BBC’s Crossing Divides; trained 1,000 individuals in 100 countries for her BBC 100 Crossing Divides around the Globe program; and created Crossing Divides On the Move, an initiative to encourage commuters to connect with each other on their way to work. She has just been nominated as an Ashoka Fellow for her work on Deep Listening.
