The Pyramids and Great Sphinx of Giza were for centuries the symbols of the entire Egyptian civilization. Mysterious and irresistible to the eye, these monumental structures suggested to visitors to the banks of the Nile a religious vision of one of the most highly refined and evolved of Mediterranean civilizations.
